NEWSLETTER- WK. of 5/7/12
Dear  Parents,

I apologize for not putting out a newsletter last week.  I guess the saying, “Don’t put off tomorrow what you should do today,” holds true in my case.   I did not have the newsletter done last Monday – end of story! Hopefully some information was communicated to you by your child, this week’s events will be an almost mirror image of last week.   Last week 5th grade completed the science section of CST. This week the entire school is scheduled for ELA.   We will test on Tuesday and  Wednesday with make-ups on Thursday.  The students seem confident and ready!

There will be no homework scheduled for this week due to testing.  Spelling  practice will be given in class, along with any other math review.  However, they are encouraged to take home their spelling list on Thursday to study  for their test on Friday.   Even though they will be given time in class to study their words, some may want to take it home earlier in the week (optional).

I hope you enjoyed our performance on the American Revolution,   what a great way to reinforce a bit of history! I thought the students did an exceptional job.  I would like to thank all of the parents who so generously provided refreshments, paper products and their time for the event.  We have such a giving and generous group of parents in Room 21!!

The cell projects and state cubes are fabulous!  They are on display in our room.  If you have not already seen them, please stop by and take a peak. The creativity is absolutely amazing!  We will begin presentations on the state cubes this week.  Projects are now behind us, parents can take a big sigh of relief!!  The only other minor project will be during open house.  Since the state cubes will be on display, students will be asked to bring a sampling of a popular food from their state, for example Washington state might serve apple pie or sliced apples.   Students have been asked to begin thinking about what they might like to serve.  I will provide tasting cups and utensils.  Specific information about the sampling will come home next week.

On Thursday, we will complete our final 30 minute timed run for GLO medals/trophies.  Students are in various places in terms of time.  This is a personal goal and not a requirement.  Some of the students have been consistent with turning in the GLO workout sheets, while others have not.  I will accept back-dated   GLO sheets if you completed the work-outs, but just failed to turn them in.

This week we will begin a new novel The Giver by Lois Lowry.  It is about a utopian society, quite a contrast from what we have been reading.  The students are looking forward to beginning the novel.

We have two possible field trips left for the year. One would be to the Art Museum. Apparently there was a scheduling conflict, so I’m   awaiting a reply to my email from the education coordinator at the museum.  I will let you know as soon as I hear.  This trip would require parent drivers.  The other trip is to Sierra Lanes for an end-of-the year bowling afternoon.  This would also require parent drivers.

If you have any questions or concerns, please call me at 248-7220 (school), 269-0760 (cell) or email at
dana.harding@fresnounified.org.

Have a wonderful week.
